PSA: Mother’s Against Drunk Dialing

Girl likes boy.

Boy doesn’t know that girl likes boy.

Girl is too shy to tell boy.

Girl hopes boy will come to the frat party tonight.

Boy doesn’t come.

Girl drinks a lot because she is upset boy is not there.

Girl is drunk.

Girl has lots of courage because she is drunk.

Girl calls boy and tells boy she likes him.

Girl does not remember it the next day.

Boy does.

Awkward times for all.

Technology has made drunk contacting infinitely easier with texting, IMing and emailing available now in addition to regular drunk dialers.  Luckily, technology is taking some of that freedom back.  I have been hearing whispers of this problem amongst teens and I thought I would alert my parent readers to the trend.

Anti-Drunk Emailing

Google released a new tool which helps prevent drunk people from sending embarrassing late-night drunk emails they might regret in the morning. Users can set it up so the program will force a user to solve a series of math problems before allowing any message to be sent.  The service is set by default to kick in only on weekend nights, but you can change the settings to apply whenever.

Anti-Drunk Calling

Virgin Mobile Australia is offering a new service that allows cell phone users to block certain numbers from being called when drunk. For the service to work, users need to dial “333” plus the phone number they want to protect. That number is then off limits until 6 a.m. the next morning. Teens can use this to make sure they do not drunk dial their crushes.

Designated Dialer

“Friends don’t let friends drink and dial.”  Many teens now have designated drunk dialers to prevent against drunk texting.  Here is a popular video amongst teens:

This is a trend that worries me very much because it means that teens are finding it so commonplace to get drunk out of their minds, they actually need a designated drunk dialer!  Have your kids heard of this? Do they think it is funny? Interesting? Scary? Bringing up this topic is a great way to get a view into how our kids view partying.
