Freelance Writing for Teens [Teen Article]

by Vanessa Van Petten

Jessica is 17 years old and enjoys writing, sleeping, making videos, and coming up with crazy ideas to do with her friends. She also writes for freelancing and for fun.

I’m not quite sure how many 17-year-olds freelance write, but I do know that there aren’t many. I started freelancing in late November of 2008. It’s been an awesome experience so far. If you want to freelance for publications, my best advice is to DO IT! Go to your favorite magazine’s website and look for their writer’s guidelines. Write something awesome, send a query letter, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming published!

Here are some magazines and other publications that have agreed to let me write an article for print:

nextSTEP
Camp Business
Teen Ink
Susie Magazine
G4T ink!
Chicken Soup for the Soul (this one isn’t guaranteed yet, but I’m hoping!)

Of course, there are always rejections. Here are just a few that I’ve received rejection notices from:

American Girl
Ignite Your Faith
Brio
Chicken Soup for the Soul
Teen Ink
Camp Business

Rejection notices aren’t bad. In fact, they’ve really helped me become a better person. They teach me what I’ve done wrong, and I have the opportunity to either submit my article to another magazine or to improve what I’ve written. Sometimes, it’s not even my fault. For example, both Brio and Ignite Your Faith were planning to discontinue a few months after I had submitted to them, so they didn’t have time to use my articles.

Some magazines pay me, while others can only offer a free issue including my article. It’s all good, though. It’s an easy business to get into, and I find it to be really fun! Even though I receive quite a bit of rejection, I know that it’s great work experience that will benefit me in the future!

Where can I find examples of a query letter?

Writer’s World is my favorite site. Just Google it. It’s the first thing to come up, and it has great advice and examples for queries.

Thanks so much for this article. It might now seem like much, but I have been trying to find places to do freelance writing for. So thanks so much!
