4 Good Reasons to Take a Year off High School

1.) It will give you time to consider all of your options.

How many teenagers know what they want to do FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES right after high school? Most high school graduates are between the ages of 17 and 19. Is that really enough time to figure out what you want to do for a career? Teenagers spend their time going to school every day for 9 months out of a year for about 14 years and spend the rest of their time hanging out with their friends! Taking a year off between high school and college can really give you time to figure out what you want to do in life. You couldn’t believe how much you grow in just one year!
Some teens just aren’t sure which college they want to go to. There are so many out there! How do you know if you’re choosing the right one? How do you know you’re not going to change your mind a few months down the road after attending? Taking a year off school can help you research colleges and it gives you a lot of time to make a decision that you can feel good about. It also allows you to find scholarships and student aid.

2.) Taking time to Job Shadow.

If you decide to take a year off between high school and college you can spend that time job shadowing. Some teens have absolutely no clue what they want to do for a career. Job shadowing not only gives you experience but also helps you figure out what kind of job suits you. Or maybe it could introduce you to a job you’ve never considered before. Do you like to be indoors or outdoors? Do you like socializing or would you rather do work not involving clients? Do you like traveling or would you rather have a constant work base? Job shadowing can even help you find a hidden talent or uncover skills you weren’t aware you had!

3.) Stability.

So you’re right out of high school and you decide you want to move out. You want a place of your own and you realize you need a job. Taking a year off high school allows you time to spend at a full time job just saving up money and preparing yourself for college. Even moving out of your parents’ nest can push you to grow. You start taking on more responsibilities and you are free to make ALL of your choices. Your parents aren’t constantly looking over your shoulder and you’re on your own! Having stable ground under your feet and a good feel for having loads of responsibility can help you a lot when it comes to college. It’s like hitting a brick wall called reality. You can’t screw around in college; you have to have excellent attendance and that means going to class even when you’re sick!

4.) Making Connections.

Taking a year off after high school allows you to go out and meet people. It gives you a lot of time with your friends and time to experience new things that involve new people. Making connections is very important in life. It opens up more opportunities for you as well as helps you gain support from peers!
