Have you ever bought a gift for a teenager and gotten the “Oh… yeah that’s nice. Thanks.” ? But you know what’s going through their head is “Why would they get me this?” I hope to eliminate the bad gifting and send you on the road to “This is great! Thank you!”
Pay attention to what the teen likes. If the teen hates video games, don’t get them a gift card to a video games store. If the teen loves video games don’t get them a gift card to Barnes and Noble book store. I think gift cards are a great present. The teen can get something they want with your money. It works out. Just don’t get one to the wrong place. Ask them where they like to shop and what they like doing if you don’t already know. I’ve noticed that when teens get asked what they want they say “I don’t know” A way to find out what clothing store to visit for a gift card would be to look at their clothes. If all they wear is Hollister, you know where to get the gift card. ITunes cards are always a safe choice, I don’t know a single teen who doesn’t like music. I would avoid buying them clothes unless you are in a clothing store with them and they say they like something specific and you know what size the teen is. You don’t want to be the person who sends sweater after sweater shoved in a box never to be seen again except by the attic’s moths. Movies and CDs are good options too, if you know what they want. You will just have to make sure its something they like and don’t already have. Ask for a list of movies and CDs they have been wanting. Lets say you know the teen really wants a new camera or a pair of Ugg boots, those are expensive gifts, you could go in on it with someone else, or a few other people. The teen will really appreciate the gift and you will save some money while knowing them you got them what they really wanted.
