How Moms Can Reach for the Stars Too

A long, long time ago, I had dreams that one day I would be a fashion designer. Through most of adolescence, I talked about being a designer and always had a pencil in hand, doodling on whatever I could get my hands on! Though I considered myself to be a good artist..a good student was something I wasn’t. Not having good grades in school did nothing to boost my parents’ confidence that I wouldn’t slack off in college.  Looking back now, I can understand their thought process. My parents both worked hard to make ends meet, and they were genuinely concerned that I would not take college seriously.

Upon graduation, instead of heading off to college, my parents enrolled me in Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. I graduated a secretary but never stopped dreaming about going back to school for fashion design. After many unhappy years as a horrible secretary, I enrolled myself into the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.  At the time, I was in my early 20’s and felt sooo old.  All of the incoming freshmen were right out of high school.  I stayed focused though and kept my eye on the prize..a degree!  I waited a long time for this moment to finally happen. Walking through the hallways and in and out of classes, I was certain of one thing…this is definitely where I belonged.  When you realize something that powerful, it’s truly a life changing experience.

I graduated a fashion designer and was successful for many years..working for lots of different companies.  I travelled throughout Europe, Hong Kong, and even to India half a dozen times putting together sportswear lines.  Having never had the opportunity or money to travel previously, I owe all my travel to my new career.  India was great learning ground.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but my experience overseas taught me about manufacturing..which included designing, sample making, production, and quality control.  Everything that I was learning about would prepare me for the here and now.  I’m a big believer in “Everything Happens for a Reason.”

My life seemed great, my career was on track, and I truly loved what I did.  Life changes though..nothing is permanent. I got married at 29 years old and had four kids spaced two years apart..I was busy!! I stopped working/commuting to NYC after my 3rd daughter..it was just too difficult and my family needed me. As every creative person knows though..you can’t walk away from your creativity. It is truly a part of you.

A blessing happened one morning when walking my four kids to the bus stop.  I took notice in a neighbor wearing a Nike Sportsack and the wheels started spinning.  I started imagining a cute screenprint on the backsack..with markers to color on.  When I got back inside my home, I started sketching and making calls to old fabric connections. One thing lead to the next and before I knew it, I was sewing up Kidzsacks!

It’s three years later, and I am a business owner, wow! I am. I have a website, overseas manufacturer, sales reps, and distributors in Europe, New Zealand & Australia.  I sell to lots of resorts and specialty shops and LOVE what I do.  I am so happy that I listened to my inner voice and pursued my dreams..all of them.
